It is an essential tool for adapting to the world and making decisions. However, this very ability, when it becomes excessive and loses its direction, can turn against the individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This happens when thoughts become repetitive, difficult to stop and unproductive. Instead of helping to clarify reality, they begin to cause distress. It is at this point that they cease to be a useful tool and become a source of psychological suffering. We usually refer to this phenomenon as <strong>\u201coverthinking\u201d or \u201cmental rumination\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what exactly does \u2018overthinking\u2019 mean? It isn\u2019t simply a matter of reflecting on or analysing a situation in depth. The problem arises when the mind gets stuck on the same train of thought over and over again, unable to move on. The person keeps returning to the same issue, as if trying to find a definitive answer that never comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As this process unfolds, the conclusions become increasingly vague. Rather than becoming clearer, more doubts arise than there were at the outset. Thought ceases to provide guidance and begins to cause confusion. This dynamic is often accompanied by emotional distress, such as anxiety, guilt or inner tension, and can interfere with daily life, affecting concentration, rest or decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthy thinking is a flexible, purposeful and useful mental activity. When a person thinks in a healthy way, their mind adapts to the available information, without becoming stuck on a single interpretation. There is a clear objective behind the thinking: to understand something, make a decision or resolve a specific situation. And, at some point, that process reaches a conclusion. It may be a firm decision or a deeper understanding of what is happening, but in any case the thinking progresses and comes to a close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overthinking, on the other hand, works very differently. Instead of moving forward, the mind goes round in circles on the same issues, as if it were unable to break free from them. There is no clear destination or real resolution, just a constant repetition of doubts, scenarios and questions. This kind of thinking is not so much about finding a solution as it is about trying to eliminate an uncertainty which, paradoxically, never completely disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more a person tries to think things through in order to calm down, the opposite happens: uncertainty grows, and with it, anxiety. Thinking ceases to be a tool and becomes a self-perpetuating cycle. Thus, the more one tries to make sense of the situation, the more confusing and distressing it becomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In everyday life, overthinking often feels like a mind that never rests. People frequently find themselves replaying conversations over and over again, trying to analyse what they said, what they should have said, or how it might have been interpreted. Added to this is a tendency to constantly anticipate negative scenarios, as if the mind were constantly preparing for potential problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This state of mind can also affect sleep, causing difficulty falling asleep due to the emergence of repetitive thoughts that do not stop once you go to bed. Throughout the day, there is a feeling of mental overload, as if the mind were \u2018full\u2019 or overburdened. Even small decisions can become complicated, as constant doubts arise and there is a need to be completely certain before acting. All of this is usually accompanied by a persistent fear of making a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for its causes, overthinking is often linked to anxiety, which drives the mind to try to anticipate and control as much as possible. It is also influenced by a need for certainty and a desire to keep situations under control, as well as a difficulty in tolerating uncertainty or fear. Added to this may be traits of high self-demand and past experiences that have reinforced the idea that making mistakes has serious consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This process can be understood as a self-perpetuating cycle. First, a doubt or fear arises. The person tries to resolve it by thinking it through and analysing the situation. However, rather than calming down, their anxiety increases. That anxiety triggers even more thinking, which in turn increases their distress, thus closing a cycle that repeats itself over and over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This pattern becomes a problem when it starts to have a significant impact on daily life. It can disrupt sleep, make it difficult to concentrate, cause frequent anxiety, affect personal relationships or hinder decision-making, preventing one from acting with clarity and spontaneity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Working through anxiety, fears and past experiences in therapy can significantly help to reduce mental rumination.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We can help you.
