Crisis helpline: 717 003 717.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h2><strong>THE CONCEPT OF SUICIDE AND SUICIDAL BEHAVIOUR.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201cThe <strong>suicide <\/strong>is an act with fatal consequences, deliberately initiated and carried out by the individual, through which they seek to bring about the desired changes.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <strong>suicide prevention <\/strong>is an act of self-harm without the intention of dying, carried out to express emotional distress, seek help or alleviate suffering. It differs from a suicide attempt in that there is no intention to die.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong>SOME FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE SUICIDAL ATTEMPTS.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There are factors that may influence a decision to attempt suicide, although the presence of these factors does not necessarily mean that a suicide attempt will take place.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To have had a <strong>previous attempt<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Background to <strong>depression <\/strong>or another <strong>mental disorder.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A family history of suicide or violence.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Background to <strong>child sexual abuse.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To suffer from a <strong>physical illness<\/strong> or to feel hopeless.<\/li>\n<li>Abuse of<strong> drugs and alcohol.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Trends <strong>impulsive <\/strong>and aggressive.<\/li><\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong>WHAT KIND OF BEHAVIOUR DOES A PERSON WHO WANTS TO COMMIT SUICIDE EXHIBIT?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>People who are contemplating suicide often experience changes in their emotions, thoughts, habits and usual behaviour, with much greater fluctuations than before.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sadness<\/strong>. Loss of interest or motivation.<\/li>\n<li>Presence of<strong> sleep and\/or eating disorders.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Insulation <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Extreme mood swings.<strong> Emotional instability.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Increase in <strong>drink-driving or reckless driving<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Verbal expressions of <strong>despair<\/strong>. Write <strong>notes <\/strong>farewell.<\/li>\n<li>Indirect dismissals. <strong>Delivery <\/strong>from <strong>possessions <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Verbal expressions <\/strong>on suicide.<\/li>\n<li>Hoarding of medicines or weapons (pills, knives, ropes, etc.).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sudden, unexplained improvement.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong>THE ROLE OF THE FAMILY.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>- One <strong>a dysfunctional, abusive or conflict-ridden family environment<\/strong> can increase a person\u2019s stress and emotional distress, which in turn can contribute to the risk of suicide.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 The <strong>lack of emotional support from family members<\/strong>, including a lack of open communication and feelings of loneliness, can leave a person feeling desperate and hopeless.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 If the relatives<strong> stigmatise or fail to understand mental health issues<\/strong>, the person is less likely to seek help and support, which can make their situation worse and increase the risk of suicide.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 The presence of <strong>a family history of suicide or mental health issues <\/strong>may increase a person\u2019s risk of suicide, whether due to genetic or environmental factors, or a combination of both.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 If the<strong> family members have firearms, medicines or other lethal items readily accessible in the home<\/strong>, this could increase the risk of the person injuring themselves.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>*It is always necessary to seek help from a professional who can provide guidance, whether or not you are currently undergoing treatment. Good communication between therapist and patient\/family is essential for managing the situation effectively.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong>SOME STEPS TO TAKE WHEN DEALING WITH PEOPLE EXHIBITING SUICIDAL BEHAVIOUR OR THOUGHTS.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Take any warning seriously.<\/li>\n<li>Call the numbers listed above. Find out about local emergency services. Keep the emergency numbers and mental health helplines for your country or region to hand. In the event of a crisis, act immediately by calling these services.<\/li>\n<li>Seek professional help and follow the treatment guidelines. Understand that this is a long-term process, so it is important to look after yourself during this time, through activities, moments of solitude, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Offer emotional support so that they can communicate openly and maintain daily contact. The sense of constant support can help alleviate feelings of hopelessness and isolation.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t judge or give advice; listen carefully and show empathy. Avoid comments such as \u2018everything will be fine\u2019, \u2018there are people in worse situations\u2019, \u2018cheer up\u2019 or \u2018change your attitude\u2019. Instead, use phrases such as \u2018I\u2019m here for you\u2019, \u2018I understand that you\u2019re suffering and you\u2019re not alone\u2019 or \u2018if at any point you want us to do something together, just let me know\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Watch out for changes in their mood. Sometimes, a sudden apparent improvement can be a warning sign, as the person may have decided to take their own life.<\/li>\n<li>Remove any items that could be used for self-harm (scissors, knives, pens, etc.). Any sharp object that could be used to cause harm to oneself.<\/li>\n<li>Stay calm and do not leave the person alone. If you need to keep an eye on the person, sleep with them at night or leave the door ajar.<\/li>\n<li>Identify protective activities. Encourage the person to take part in activities that promote their well-being (art, music, sport, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Building a support network provides supervision and increases safety.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<h2><strong>HOW SHOULD A CARER LOOK AFTER SOMEONE EXHIBITING SUICIDAL BEHAVIOUR?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Setting healthy boundaries. <\/strong>Don\u2019t take full responsibility for the other person\u2019s well-being. Recognise that it\u2019s not up to you to \u2018save\u2019 them, but you can be there for them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seek professional help.<\/strong> Attend individual therapy or support groups for family members and carers. This helps to manage anxiety, guilt and emotional exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look after your mental and physical health. <\/strong>Get plenty of sleep, eat a balanced diet and engage in self-care activities (hobbies, exercise, rest) to avoid empathy burnout.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoiding isolation<\/strong>. Don\u2019t face the situation alone. Talk to friends, family members or mental health professionals about what you\u2019re going through.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn about suicide and mental health. <\/strong>Recognising the warning signs and knowing how to respond in a crisis. This reduces anxiety and increases your sense of control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Practise self-compassion. <\/strong>Don\u2019t blame yourself for the situation or for the possible outcomes.
